EISENSTEIN: CINEMA AS A TOOL OF PROPAGANDA

The leaders of the Soviet Union recognized the power of film to influence social and political attitudes. Film production was nationalized in Russia in 1917, after the Bolshevik Revolution. "Of all the arts," Vladimir Lenin said, " for us , the cinema is the most important." Throughout the period many documentary and fictional silent films were produced to abet the Leninist cause and Sergei Eisenstein produced some of the most notable works of the time.

Peter Greenaway's film on Eisenstein, once again, casts a new and fresh light on the director and his life. How should his work be evaluated or revaluated, especially with the trajectory of time and historical developments, and how important and relevant are Eisenstein's experiences for contemporary filmmakers in today's Russia who are facing the same pressures and dilemmas to make films addressing issues sanctioned by the state?

After the screening of Sounds from the Fog there will be a discussion on the persecution of gay men under Nazi and Soviet regimes. What were the experiences of prisoners convicted for their homosexuality, how did they survive and how is this historical episode discussed in today’s Germany and Russia?
