Side by Side LGBT Film Festival in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Saint Petersburg have organized a Special Event: Cinema and Civil Activism. The event scheduled for 5th and 6th June, 2010 will screen the films of German directors Wieland Speck and Rosa von Praunheim, whose art and socio-political activities have radically changed the position of gays and lesbians in Germany. Following the screenings there will be the opportunity to meet Wieland Speck director of Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section, co-founder of the Teddy Award and gay activist. Wieland Speck will talk about his work, German film and take questions from the audience.

Wieland Speck, b. 1951 Director of Berlin International Film Festival’s Panorama section since 1992, director of "Westler" (1985), co-founder of the Teddy Award, founder of the production company for short films Kurzfilmverleih, screenwriter, film and TV producer, associate professor and film scholar. An integral part of Wieland Speck’s life and work is his political activism fighting for the rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people. |

Rosa von Praunheim, b. 1942 The most prominent representative of German postmodern cinema. In 1970, Rosa von Praunheim shot his most famous film "It is not the Homosexual that is Perverted, but the Situation in which he Lives." The film was one of the driving forces behind the development of the gay and lesbian liberation movement in Germany. |
