SUSAN STRYKER

Susan Stryker won an Emmy Award for the 2005 film Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton's Cafeteria, which told the little-remembered story of a 1966 uprising against police violence by trans people in San Francisco. She has been a transgender activist since the early 1990s, when she was a co-founder of the direct-action group Transgender Nation. An academic as well as an activist and filmmaker, Susan is a professor of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Arizona, and co-editor of the journal TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly. She's attending the Side by Side festival to represent We've Been Around, the GLAAD Media Award-winning online mini-documentary series about transgender history directed by Rhys Ernst, for which she was a consulting producer.

I'm very much looking forward to sharing work about the long history of trans people in the United States with Russian audiences, and to discussing shared hopes and challenges regarding current affairs.”
